Max Coburn, often under the name ‘Maxo’ is a musician and sound designer from Brooklyn, New York who specializes in digitally produced music, channelling a wide array of style and influence from Jazz, to Digital Fusion, to various types of dance music and beyond.
Maxo has been a major player in many music communities for over a decade, and is known best for works including the acclaimed Chordslayer EP & website, his influential LEVEL MUSIC project, contributions to popular indie games, Celeste and Spin Rhythm XD, and his most recent soundtrack for Netflix’s interactive series, Battle Kitty.
Max grew up in a musical household. His dad, also a professional musician, taught him piano at a young age while Max developed his ear through the music of his favorite TV shows and video games. This is something Max remains passionate about to this day. Through this, he gained an early interest in a wealth of different music, spurring him to lean into jazz studies and play in rock bands throughout high school. During this time he developed a love for music production and regularly practiced and experimented under the name Maxo. In 2013, Max graduated SUNY Purchase with a Bachelor of Music degree studying Studio Composition, a program centered around songwriting & production, where he was able to create to his heart’s content and further develop as a professional musician.
Both in and beyond school, Maxo garnered attention with his developing brand of detailed, jazz-influenced electronic music and played frequent live sets in and around New York. He has since released both original and remixed music under a diverse variety of labels & imprints including PC Music, NHX, Maltine Records, TREKKIE TRAX, Brainfeeder, Record Record, DESKPOP, ubiktune, and more. This music has brought Maxo to stages around the world, Boiler Room set at SXSW to tours in Japan, South Korea, and various cities in the US and Canada. In line with his success as an independent musician, Max has been able to explore a variety of scoring opportunities, from more intimate personal projects all the way to hit indie-game soundtracks and full-scale animation scoring.
With his expanding global audience, Max continues to direct his creativity toward his passion for music, both independent and for media alike.
Max currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. When not focused on making music, he enjoys playing games, cooking, watching anime, and going for leisurely walks.
